Mailing for Oct. 20 Meeting

  Hi, All.

I hope you’re well.

We all get a lot of email and if you would like to be removed from my personal email list, please just let me know.

Our website is at https://table-talk-celebrate.blogspot.com. Some posts include previous topics or suggestions, websites and podcasts.

The next meetings are scheduled for the following Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room.

     October 20

Bill and I are moving the first week of November. We’ve been vary happy here with friends and acquaintances, but the other community offers a smoother commute to family without the challenges of I-95. There are many nice things about the community and house, too!

This Monday night, we'd like to show you some photos from our trip to Europe (most of September) and discuss what we should have discussed before. We'd like to learn if you want to continue as a chartered club, and if so, we'll need a contact name for Kimber.

As always, you are welcome to bring your own topics.

I hope to see you Monday.

Cheers,

Marcia

Mailing for October 6 Meeting

 Hi, All.

I hope you’re well.

We all get a lot of email and if you would like to be removed from my personal email list, please just let me know.

The next meetings are scheduled for the following Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room.

     October 6
     October 20

Bill and I are moving the first week of November. We were looking at communities for a cousin who wants to move to VA for family reasons, and we found a community we like in Trilogy of Lake Frederick. As it happens, some friends already live there. We’ve been vary happy here with friends and acquaintances, but the other community offers a smoother commute to family without the challenges of I-95. There are many nice things about the community and house, too!

This all means that as a chartered club we have to decide on leadership and any changes that need to be incorporated and we’ll need to notify Kimber - she should help guide us through the process. The group will need to decide how to market the meetings, if you’ll use email or Facebook and TownSQ, and if you want to keep the website (Google Blogger). We’ll need to discuss this Monday night.

We spent a month in Europe and have other things to talk about!

As always, you are welcome to bring your own topics.

I hope to see you Monday.

Cheers,

Marcia

Mailing for September 1 Meeting

 Hi, All.

I hope you’re well.

We all get a lot of email and if you would like to be removed from my personal email list, please just let me know.

You don’t need to be a member to enjoy our resources and information posted on our website at https://table-talk-celebrate.blogspot.com. Some posts include previous topics or suggestions.

We have a small group, room for more, and it’s one of the activities people can join if they’re still working. All are welcome! Meetings are scheduled for the following Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room.

September 1 (Yes, we know it's Labor Day.)
September 15
October 6
October 20

It was suggested we consider changing the time to accommodate those who play Bingo at the lodge. Our schedule is published on the calendar and is known to many people as we've been meeting at 7 for the past few years. I think it would be hard to change the time. I usually get into the room around 6:30 to set up and chat with early birds.

I'm running the same comment a couple of times as we'll be on vacation and will miss providing new posts for you. I will try to remember to send our usual reminder note on 9/15, but please make a note for yourself, too. As before, you are more than welcome to come and chat, and please take an attendance sheet as Grace did last time we were away.

Given the atmosphere in the community, it would be nice to think about ways to improve the situation. I'm also interested in escapism - what are you reading, listening to, watching?

As always, you are welcome to bring your own topics.

I hope to see you soon.

Cheers,

Marcia

I do not know about the last discussion as we were in California.

With a recall petition against our HOA Board of Directors, I imagine some of you may want your discuss this. I hope we can discuss other topics, as well.

I found this interesting quote: “History is not only the study of the past. It’s an explanation of the present.” Do you have some thoughtful quotes for us?

As always, you are welcome to bring your own topics.

I hope to see you soon.

    Mailing for July 21 Meeting

    July 21
    August 4
    August 18

On June 7 we talked about:
    • travel plans and places, local and far, far away
    • Yogaville for yoga and meditation https://www.yogaville.org/
    • a farm where you can pick cherries - the name I wrote didn’t come up in a web search but you can find cherry farms on Yelp. I inserted Manassas as the location https://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=Cherry+Picking+Farm&find_loc=Manassas%2C+VA+20110
    • there’s a Holy Cross Retreat a few people were familiar with https://www.virginiatrappists.org/
    • a cheese farm near Shenandoah was mentioned but we didn’t have the name. A Google search brought this result "Mountain Branch Creamery Happy Creek Cheeses and George's Mill Farm Artisan Cheese”
    • Marker Miller Orchards Farm Market in Winchester offers fresh fruits for picking along with a store https://www.markermillerorchards.com/
    • Inglewood Farm in Bealton is the one where people go to get corn. Watch for announcements.  https://pickyourown.farm/farm/inglewood-farm-12554/
    • recommended the Black Sheep Restaurant in Manassas. Beautiful restaurant, food is excellent, and they have outdoor concerts in the summer, a brewery and I don’t  know what else! https://theblacksheeprestaurant.com/
    • you can visit Burnside Farms in the Spring for the tulips and late Summer/Fall for the sunflowers. Purchase admission on their website. You pick a few flowers for free and pay for more. Gorgeous fields! https://www.burnsidefarms.com/
    • the biting dog and upcoming trial and now there’s a swimming dog (outside pool, inside exercise room) that has been reported but no response yet. Biting dog update: they went to court, the owner was fined $250 and told to control the dog. More info is on the community Facebook page.
    • discussed Medicare choices, sifting through options and some of the difficulties
    • Netflix TV series "Dept Q" and “Younger”
As always, bring your own topics!

I hope to see you soon.

Before we get into topics, Al Roe used to come to our meetings and he was an interesting guy, tremendous professional background and a loving family man. He had a lot to say about good management as he was a great manager and trainer. He died recently and we'll all miss him.

When you go to a gathering like our's, you get to know people differently than when you are there for recreation with limited conversation. Without Table Talk, there are several people we probably would not have met and we look forward to hearing your latest.

There's a minute video about why ruins are underground, why cities are built on top of each other. They mention ancient cities like Troy and modern cities like Seattle. It's not a long video but it includes some ads.

Coursera offers individual interest courses and courses for work certifications. All are online, some are free and some have a small fee. This link is for their Arts and Humanities courses.

If you like museums, most have websites with pages of their collections and special exhibits. Here's a link to the Louvre. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid is one of my favorites with pieces from the Renaissance to modern art. It's a great way to get an overview of art through the centuries. Have a favorite museum with a great website? Please let us know!

Last time we met I mentioned two movies: one is the documentary about prisoners making quilts for foster kids and autistic children. “The Quilters” is on Netflix and can probably be streamed elsewhere. “My Cousin Vinny” is the fun courtroom movie and is available on several sites, sometimes pops up on AMC or Paramount. Since we were discussing homelessness, in a post-Table Talk discussion, we were talking about how the closing of institutions contributed to the problem. There was a book then a movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” about people in a mental institution and how they were treated and it was influential in closing many institutions.

    Earlier in June:
    • We learned that there is a service from Mary Washington University that takes you via chartered bus to theaters in other locations. Information is here.

    • We talked about data centers and have various questions about what they are and how they work. I did a search and found lots of videos. Click here.

    • The downtown Fredericksburg trolly tour is always fun. Click here.

    1. Meeting Schedule: Save the dates

We have a small group, room for more, and it’s one of the activities people can join if they’re still working. All are welcome! Meetings are scheduled for the following Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room.

    March 17

    April 7

    April 21

    2. The last time and our upcoming meeting

    Last time we discussed:
    • Table Talk Club election - we decided to rotate leaders for a few sessions
    • Five Wishes booklet for your end of life decisions and what you want loved ones to know and do,
    • Upcoming movies at the Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater in Culpeper,
    • "An Arm and a Leg" podcast about the cost of healthcare, denials by insurance companies and what to do about it. You can listen online at https://armandalegshow.com.
    • It was noted that we’re not supposed to delve into politics and religion and we have skirted around some of this including the costs of elections, term limits and such. Generalities we usually agree on and it is good to learn others’ perspectives. We had a couple of comments about what Capitalism is and DEI (diversity equity and inclusion) came up. We determined it was such a political hot potato we decided to pass.
    This Monday:
    • Dining out, local sights for day trips - bring in some recommendations,
    • How do you keep busy? Volunteering? Hobbies/interests?
    • What is on your mind? Do you have some tips, websites, podcasts or books to share?
Please bring a list of any of the following to help determine topics:
    • favorite websites,
    • your subscription magazines/papers - how did you choose and what’s important to you about them?
    • names of books you’ve recently read, movies or shows you've seen
    • summary of recent articles of interest, and
    • whatever is on your mind.

The Investment Club will have a guest speaker talking about estate planning. Bill and I have talked about this for years, gone to a few presentations and even hired a lawyer a couple of years ago (that didn't work out). We were stuck on who should manage our money, make medical decisions, be in charge of our assets. Now we're determined to get it done this year.

Maybe you've procrastinated, maybe you just know it's time to get to work on this. Some of us have moved from other states and the laws are different. Some have had losses that change estate plans. If you want to start gather information and make decisions, it's a good time to take advantage of this opportunity. You're not obligated to hire Mr. Osler and they will not have a copy of your email address unless you personally provide it to them..

    Here's the blurb:

February 25, 6-8 p.m. Jonathan B. Osler, PLLC will be presenting "Overview of Estate Planning: Learn How to Protect Your Assets and Plan for the Future.” Jon Osler counsels individuals and families on matters regarding the preservation, management, and transfer of wealth. Jon’s practice involves all aspects of the estate planning process, including the designing, preparation, and administration of trusts, wills, and related ancillary documents. You can read more about him on his website at https://oslerlaw.com.  This event will be held at the William J. Howell Branch Library and  space is limited. Registration for this event is at https://forms.gle/Mdusf8uV84YmrNss5. If you have a family member who will be helping you, you are welcome to register them, too. Please respond no later than February 18.

    2. Our upcoming meeting and other news

Feb. 3 is also Bingo night and there will be a food truck with hot dogs at the lodge. It's fine with me if you bring food into the room, have your dinner and clean up!

I was listening to a podcast about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. "Intrinsic motivation" is when you do something because it's meaningful to you. It's enjoyable, satisfying, interesting, it helps you improve your skills, etc. "Extrinsic motivation" is when you're rewarded for your project, maybe monetarily, maybe it's for praise or acknowledgment. For example, if a child enjoys practicing the piano and feels an internal sense of accomplishment (intrinsic motivation), the child is more likely to continue practicing. However, if the parent pays the child to practice, the motivation and joy of playing the piano lessens. What do you think about this? Did you notice this in your own family?

One more thing: Bill and I have procrastinated on our estate planning and there are reasons for that, but it's time for us to complete the task. (We don't want our fabulous riches to go to a "Save the Pencils" fund and we want to carefully choose our team of  those who will make medical and financial decisions for us.) It's a lot to decide and, to that end, we'll be at the Investment Club's presentation. Here's the note about that:

    3. Notes from Last Time & Some Links

We got an update from Pam Pospisil, Mike Flood and Bill Cox about their lobbying trip to Richmond to hopefully get the state law changed for Bingo. It was a "no" for now but it's not dead in the water. Please check Facebook for updates, or better yet - come up and talk about it!

We talked about the free movies at the Library of Congress in Culpeper, and I wanted to give you the link.https://www.loc.gov/events/?fa=subject%3Afilm+and+video+screenings&c=150

We’ve seen 3 movies there and it’s been a lovely experience. It isn’t far from some good restaurants and we enjoyed dining at Natraj Indian Cuisine on Saturday.

There is TSA-style screening so don’t bring in a pocket knife. The movies are free, no eating or drinking in the theater so it’s clean. They ask that you silence or turn off your phone. There is plenty of leg room. Because it gets cooler as the movie starts, I bring a lap blanket like a sensible old lady. :)

If you’d like to carpool, please suggest a couple of movies as there are already several on our calendar!

We’ll use the list to determine topics.

I hope to see you soon.

    Cheers,

    2. Our upcoming meeting

Seems like a long time since we met...because it is! Since it snowed last time and prior to that we had the holidays, you must have a buildup of all kinds of things you'd like to discuss. Bring 'em!

I like to listen to podcasts and think you might enjoy some of these:

Spycraft 101 - experts discussing espionage and covert operations. I just listened to #174 via Apple Podcasts about a German spy ring in Staten Island with guest Robert Weingartner.

An Arm and a Leg - guests discuss the cost of healthcare and the steps you can take to reduce your costs. You can listen by clicking on this page.

HiddenBrain - "explores the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior and questions that lie at the heart of our complex and changing world."

What is on your mind? Do you have some tips, websites, podcasts or books to share?

Please bring a list of any of the following:

    • favorite websites
    • your subscription magazines/papers - how did you choose and what’s important to you about them?
    • names of books you’ve recently read
    • summary of recent articles of interest
    • topics on your mind

We’ll use the list to determine topics.

I hope to see you soon.

    Cheers,

    Marcia
