1. Meeting Schedule: Save the dates

We have a small group, room for more, and it’s one of the activities people can join if they’re still working. All are welcome! Meetings are scheduled for the following Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room.

2. Our upcoming meeting and other news

Feb. 3 is also Bingo night and there will be a food truck with hot dogs at the lodge. It's fine with me if you bring food into the room, have your dinner and clean up!

I was listening to a podcast about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. "Intrinsic motivation" is when you do something because it's meaningful to you. It's enjoyable, satisfying, interesting, it helps you improve your skills, etc. "Extrinsic motivation" is when you're rewarded for your project, maybe monetarily, maybe it's for praise or acknowledgment. For example, if a child enjoys practicing the piano and feels an internal sense of accomplishment (intrinsic motivation), the child is more likely to continue practicing. However, if the parent pays the child to practice, the motivation and joy of playing the piano lessens. What do you think about this? Did you notice this in your own family?

One more thing: Bill and I have procrastinated on our estate planning and there are reasons for that, but it's time for us to complete the task. (We don't want our fabulous riches to go to a "Save the Pencils" fund and we want to carefully choose our team of  those who will make medical and financial decisions for us.) It's a lot to decide and, to that end, we'll be at the Investment Club's presentation. Here's the note about that:

February 25, 6-8 p.m. Jonathan B. Osler, PLLC will be presenting "Overview of Estate Planning: Learn How to Protect Your Assets and Plan for the Future.” Jon Osler counsels individuals and families on matters regarding the preservation, management, and transfer of wealth. Jon’s practice involves all aspects of the estate planning process, including the designing, preparation, and administration of trusts, wills, and related ancillary documents. You can read more about him on his website at https://oslerlaw.com. This event will be held at the William J. Howell Branch Library and  space is limited. Registration for this event is at https://forms.gle/Mdusf8uV84YmrNss5Please respond no later than February 18.

What is on your mind? Do you have some tips, websites, podcasts or books to share?

Please bring a list of any of the following:

  • favorite websites
  • your subscription magazines - how did you choose and what’s important to you about them?
  • names of a few books you’ve recently read
  • summary of recent articles of interest
  • topics on your mind

3. Notes from Last Time & Some Links

We got an update from Pam Pospisil, Mike Flood and Bill Cox about their lobbying trip to Richmond to hopefully get the state law changed for Bingo. It was a "no" for now but it's not dead in the water. Please check Facebook for updates, or better yet - come up and talk about it!

We talked about the free movies at the Library of Congress in Culpeper, and I wanted to give you the link.https://www.loc.gov/events/?fa=subject%3Afilm+and+video+screenings&c=150

We’ve seen 3 movies there and it’s been a lovely experience. It isn’t far from some good restaurants and we enjoyed dining at Natraj Indian Cuisine on Saturday.

There is TSA-style screening so don’t bring in a pocket knife. The movies are free, no eating or drinking in the theater so it’s clean. They ask that you silence or turn off your phone. There is plenty of leg room. Because it gets cooler as the movie starts, I bring a lap blanket like a sensible old lady. :)

If you’d like to carpool, please suggest a couple of movies as there are already several on our calendar!

We’ll use the list to determine topics.

I hope to see you soon.

Cheers,

Marcia
