2. A few topics for upcoming meetings
I appreciate the 4th of July. I think about our Founding Fathers and the risks they took in the declaration of this separate nation, the thought and compromises involved in creating our Declaration of Independence and the idealistic foundation laid for the philosophy of this country. Is it perfect? I don’t think so, but it is a remarkable start following principles of Enlightenment humanism.
When I was young and living in North Carolina, our family would go to the County Fairgrounds with a picnic dinner and watch the fireworks. We never sat around and talked about patriotism but we girls made assumptions that people served their country in a variety of ways: by being in the military when called, by serving their community, by helping others, by knowing the issues and candidates and voting in every election, by paying our taxes and being responsible citizens.
How do you celebrate the 4th of July? What about other National Holidays such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day?
Please bring a list of any of the following:
- favorite websites
- your subscription magazines - how did you choose and what’s important to you about them?
- names of a few books you’ve recently read
- summary of recent articles of interest
- topics on your mind
We’ll use the list to determine topics.
I hope you can go and discuss topics on Monday, July 3, and I hope to see you on July 17.
Cheers,
Marcia
