1. Upcoming Meetings

The next meetings are scheduled for Mondays at 7PM in the Rappahannock Room on the following dates:
    • February 20
    • March 6
    • March 20
2. Updated Website: two new pages!

 3. Al Roe’s Barbershop Memories
Al watched the video “How barbershops can keep men healthy” (Time12:59)

With Al’s permission, here are his comments.

“I watched several of your recommended programs and the barbershop one was of special interest to me.  In my small hometown there were two places were men would gather, the barbershop and the pool room.
The barbershop was in a large room with three barbers and a seating protocol. The chairs along the back wall were reserved for what was called “The Staff.”  These were men not needing a haircut but came everyday for a BS session. Of course they were all knowing on all things. The conversation topics were sports, politics and women never religion. The haircut customers would sit along the sidewall.

The pool room was a different environment. You had to be 16 years old to enter and women were not allowed. The main topic was local high school sports. In the Turtle Creek valley of Pittsburgh there were 4 high schools with great competition between them. When we would have a loss the last place you wanted to go was the poolroom. There was absolutely no concern about one’s feelings.

The poolroom also provided sex education supported by a selection of visual aids on the walls.

As I think back to the barbershop and pool room experience it provided some very valuable life lessons, respect, being part of the town family, and accepting responsibility. It was a very important time in my life.”

4. A few topics, shows and links you might find interesting
In our last meeting, the following were recommended:

Netflix: 7 Days Before, New Amsterdam
News Magazine: The Week (According to Media Bias/Fact Check, there is a strong liberal leaning.)
Storytellers:
Podcasts - The Moth, Fresh Air
Joel ben Izzy (It’s not a mistake that the “middle name” is not capitalized. It’s a Jewish name and “ben” means “son” so he’s Joel, son of Izzy.)

If you read or watch any of the above, it’ll be interesting to hear what you think of them.

Please bring a list of any of the following:
  • favorite websites
  • your subscription magazines - how did you choose and what’s important to you about them?
  • names of a few books you’ve recently read
  • summary of recent articles of interest
  • topics on your mind
We’ll use the list to determine topics.

I hope to see you Monday night, February 20.

Cheers,

Marcia
